Discovering the 12-Count Compás
One of the most essential components of Flamenco is the 12-count rhythm.
Most of us grew up listening to music built almost entirely on a 4/4 time signature. While 4/4 is standard in modern culture, it can actually be quite limiting. When we are first introduced to music structured in 12s, it can feel like a completely foreign concept. But is it really?
Our clocks measure time in 12s, which is why I always use the visual of a clock face to teach the 12-count compás. In my opinion, 12 is a much more natural time signature for our bodies. Integrating these dynamic accents and feelings into your movement is not only exhilarating, but it also deepens your connection to with the dance.
I introduce the 12-count compás to every student right from the start because I genuinely believe it supports both physical and mental health. Navigating complex rhythms grounds the mind, improves focus, and invites a joyful sense of presence.
Below, you will find a rhythm track video for Soleá por Bulerías using the clock method to help you visualize and internalize this concept with ease.

Perfect for new dancers starting out. Learn the fundamental rhythms of compás, basic footwork, and graceful hand movements in a supportive, high-energy studio environment.
